Replacing an Aging Cedar Roof with Brava Synthetic Shake
Background
This home originally featured a real cedar wood shake roof that had reached the end of its lifespan and needed to be replaced. Because the homeowners association required homes to maintain either cedar or synthetic cedar roofing, the homeowners needed a solution that preserved the traditional appearance of wood shake while providing modern performance.
Real cedar can also present challenges when it comes to homeowners insurance, making a synthetic alternative an attractive option for this project.
Solution
Lindholm Roofing replaced the aging cedar roof with a Brava synthetic shake roofing system. Brava provides the distinctive look and character of natural cedar without using real wood, offering the homeowners a durable alternative that met their HOA requirements.
Because synthetic shake has a smoother surface than natural cedar, we also installed snow guards to help control snow and ice as it moves off the roof during Chicago-area winters.
Several additional improvements were completed as part of the new roofing system. New underlayment and ice-and-water shield were installed, including additional protection around the home’s distinctive turret. New roof vents were added, and our team fabricated and installed a custom copper chimney saddle and flashing to help protect this vulnerable area from water intrusion.
The project also included new oversized aluminum gutters. Creating the gutter system around the home’s curved turret required individual sections to be carefully fitted and riveted together to follow its radius—a custom detail that allowed the drainage system to complement the Glenview home’s unique architecture.
The finished project maintains the classic appearance of a cedar shake roof while adding modern materials, weather protection, and custom details designed for long-term performance.
